Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal Treatment (RCT)

Root Canal Treatment (RCT), also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure performed to treat a tooth with a damaged or infected pulp. The pulp is the innermost part of the tooth, containing nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to deep cavities, repeated dental procedures, fractures, or trauma, it can cause severe pain and lead to the formation of abscesses.

During a root canal procedure, the dentist or endodontist removes the infected or damaged pulp from the tooth’s interior. The tooth’s root canals are cleaned, shaped, and disinfected to eliminate any remaining bacteria. After the thorough cleaning, the root canals are filled with a biocompatible material, often a rubber-like substance called gutta-percha, to seal the space and prevent further infection.

Following the root canal, a dental crown is usually placed on the treated tooth to restore its strength and functionality. This crown provides protection and support to the tooth, allowing it to function normally in the oral cavity. Root Canal Treatment is a highly effective way to save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted due to irreparable damage or infection, helping to alleviate pain and preserve the natural tooth structure.
